On May 8 and 9 in 2025, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) hosted the second DeepTech Summit in Benguerir, Morocco. The international event examined deep technologies and their role in sustainable development across Africa.

More than 5,500 participants from 53 countries attended, including founders, investors, researchers, and policymakers. The theme was "Redefining Progress: How AI Is Transforming Deep Tech Innovation."

A pan-African event with global reach

The summit addressed artificial intelligence in healthcare, agricultural technology, clean energy, and cybersecurity. Its program presented Africa as an active contributor to the digital transformation rather than a passive adopter.

Speakers included Jalal Charaf of UM6P, Renée Cummings of the University of Virginia, and Stavros Yannouka of the WISE-Qatar Foundation. Yassine Lagzoui moderated sessions, while Anita Erskine and Sofia Zine-Eddine hosted the ceremonies.

More than 60 panels, workshops, and startup presentations took place. An Innovation Village displayed prototypes from startups and university laboratories, with UM6P Ventures supporting many of the projects.

UM6P's role in African deep tech

Convening researchers, founders, and investors

By hosting the summit, UM6P brought international participants together to develop AI-enabled responses to African challenges and connect research with capital and implementation.

Integrating AI across disciplines

Artificial intelligence is embedded in research and student projects rather than treated only as a separate subject. This approach applies technical methods to practical problems in an African context.

Building research and education capacity

AI Movement, a UNESCO-recognized center, promotes ethical AI, trains specialists, and supports local innovation. The Moroccan International Center for Artificial Intelligence aims to strengthen Morocco's position as a regional hub for innovative and responsible AI.

UM6P's College of Computing offers programs in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data science. It collaborates with more than 87 international institutions, and its Master in Applied Data Science prepares professionals for data-informed decisions.

Supporting entrepreneurship

UM6P Ventures funds early-stage deep-tech companies and provides mentoring, legal support, and international networks. Programs such as the DTS Prize connect founders with investors.

Aligning with national strategy

UM6P's work aligns with Morocco's Digital Strategy 2020-2025 and receives substantial support from the OCP Group. That backing enables investment in AI laboratories and startup incubators.

Why Orchid Island attended

The event offered an opportunity to examine how emerging technologies may change property search, building operations, investment analysis, and urban development. Explore Orchid Island properties.

Why deep tech matters to real estate

Property is becoming more connected to technology. Smart-building systems can improve energy and operational efficiency. Predictive analytics can support market analysis, while data-informed urban planning can contribute to more sustainable development.

Engaging with the technology ecosystem helps a property company identify relevant partners and assess new tools before they become standard practice. It also requires care with data quality, privacy, security, and the limits of automated predictions.

DeepTech Summit 2025 highlighted a more ambitious, inclusive, and sustainable direction for innovation in Africa. For Orchid Island, it provided a view beyond conventional brokerage and toward technologies likely to influence the built environment.

With institutions such as UM6P supporting research, education, and entrepreneurship, Africa is helping define the next stage of technological development.
