Morocco Visas and Residence Permits: General Guide

Short Visits

Some nationalities can enter without obtaining a visa in advance for a limited stay, while others require a tourist visa. A common permitted period is up to 90 days, but it should not be assumed for every passport.

Entry permission does not automatically authorize employment or long-term residence.

Long Stays and Work

People moving for employment, family, study, retirement or other long-term purposes may need a visa and residence process appropriate to that purpose. Employers and applicants should confirm work authorization separately.

Property ownership alone should not be assumed to create residence rights.

Residence Card

Applications for a carte de séjour are generally handled through the local police or designated authority for the place of residence. Required documents can vary, but may include:

• passport and entry evidence
• photographs and application forms
• proof of address
• evidence of income, employment or other purpose
• criminal-record or civil-status documents
• medical or insurance information where requested

Ask which documents require certification, translation or recent issue dates.

Application and Renewal

Begin before the authorized stay expires. Retain copies of the full file and any receipt issued while the application is processed.

Residence cards are time-limited and renewal should begin before expiry. Changes of address, employment or family status may require notification.

Practical Preparation

Arrange health insurance appropriate to the intended stay and confirm how banking, tax and foreign income rules apply. French or Darija can be important in administrative procedures, so a qualified translator may help with documents.

Avoid relying solely on informal online advice. Procedures can differ by case and local office.

Property and Residence Are Separate

Foreign residents buying or renting property should complete the normal legal checks. A notary can advise on the property transaction, while immigration and tax advice should come from professionals qualified in those areas.
