Fashion of Yesterday and Today: Azerbaijani Dress in Marrakech

On April 26, 2025, the Musée de l’Art Culinaire Marocain in Marrakech hosted an evening devoted to heritage and couture. Titled “Mode d’Antan et d’Aujourd’hui”, the event created a dialogue between Moroccan artistry and international influences, including traditional dress from Azerbaijan.

The evening began with an exhibition of vintage Moroccan caftans. A live fashion presentation then moved from historic pieces to contemporary interpretations, showing how inherited forms and techniques can be revisited without losing their cultural context.

Traditional Azerbaijani garments were presented in partnership with Nargis Magazine. Hand embroidery, symbolic patterns, structured silhouettes, and richly textured fabrics gave the audience a point of comparison with Morocco's own textile and ceremonial traditions.

Moroccan designers Wafaa Idrissi and Mina Binebine presented contemporary caftans informed by local craft. Placing their work alongside Azerbaijani dress broadened the programme from a single fashion tradition into a conversation about how clothing carries identity, memory, and artistic exchange.

Gastronomy and Andalusian Ambiance

Moroccan tagines, pastries, and tea accompanied the presentation, with Andalusian music shaping the atmosphere. Food, music, and dress were treated as related forms of cultural expression rather than isolated displays.

Organised by the Association Route de la Soie et d’Al Andalus, the event used fashion and food to highlight shared respect for craft and heritage. The setting in Marrakech's culinary museum reinforced the idea that cultural traditions can be preserved while remaining open to new interpretation and international collaboration.
